Hello all, I've got a unique (to me) problem and I really need your help.

My brother-in-law took his 1996 Mitsubishi Pajero Junior on an off-road trail that it had no business being on, got it stuck several miles in, just to the side of the trail, and had to hike back out. That was 6 months ago. He has abandoned the vehicle to rot in our national forest...

I'm back in town so this Sunday my Dad and I are going to try and recover the vehicle. To make matters worse, my BIL threw away the key out of frustration....

Because its rated as a "hard" off-road trail, I won't be able to bring my car trailer to the vehicle. We will have a vehicle with a ~10,000lb winch to aid with recovery.

So I have some questions:

• Is it possible to hot-wire the vehicle? Or does it have an immobilizer? If we can't hotwire it, do we have any other options? Are we completely out of luck? Can we get a new ignition starter switch + key?
• What about towing it out with a tow strap? Will the steering wheel be immobilized if we can't get it started? Is there a specific way we could overcome that? I have watched some videos about hot-wiring and overcoming locked steering wheels but I'm not sure they will apply here.

So, what do you all think? Definitely going to be quite an ordeal, just trying to prepare as best I can.
We plan to come out with tow straps, a fresh battery, jumper box + cables, shovel, some gas, and our tools.
Is there anything else I should bring?
What are your thoughts?
