Default Using Shiftable Automatic Trans

Can someone please explain why this is in my Galant? It's neat to mess around with but is there any real advantage to using it? All I can tell is that it lessens the traction control. Also, does it hurt the transmission to switch back and forth while the car is moving? If I was to use it from 0-70mph and then switch back to auto, am I going to mess anything up?
