Question 03 Outlander Timing Belt Question

Guys, bare with me on this (it's the beginning of a series of questions I have)...

1) Crank Pos. Sensor & Cam Pos. Sensor codes were thrown.
2) Timing & Balancer belts broke.
3) Crank Pos. Sensor Plate bent
4) Crank Pos. Sensor was ripped as a result of the plate bending.

Everything is replaced, all timing marks line up after at least 2 complete clockwise rotations on camshaft.

My only uncertainty: the proper installation (mounting position) of the crankshaft pos. sensor. Does the raised side of the sensor face the engine or away from it? The shop manual is very ambiguous in all diagrams shown. Based upon the indent on the block I assume the raised portion fits there (so it should face the engine).

My other question is: Can you start this engine WITHOUT the serpentine belt installed? I ask because I don't want to install the upper/lower covers until I can get everything checked out. And I'm sure you probably have guessed it... it will not start at this point. Again, I wonder if it will start with just the battery and not the alternator.

Thanks, and sorry for the length.

you do realize that your motor is an interference motor. This means that if the motor was running when the timing belt went there is a good chance that your valves are toast.

@The Engineer,

Yes, I'm aware that it is from sifting through posts here online. That being the case, as well as what I've tried to describe, do you believe this is why the engine will not start? Better yet, are there any telltale signs that I could have valve damage? (Scantool codes etc.)

Thanks,
MD

well if your motor is back in time. Then do a compression test. If you are getting bad compression numbers with the timing belt set then you have most likely bent the valves

Long day... ok, I've got good compression on all 4 cylinders. Anyone?
