Default 6-speed

Does anyone know what type of transmission is in a 97 non-turbo GS. My transmission is messed up in 2nd gear and im lookin to put a 6-speed tranny in my eclipse. I was hopin that i could order one or maybe get it out of a corvette or mazda......sumthin with a 6-speed if it will fit in my car. Hit me up and let me know.

Sorry bud, there aren't many FWD cars with a 6-speed. You can *try* to see if the Getrag from and SVT focus would have a chance of bolting up. I'm loosely using the term "bolting up" because chances are you'll need a custom adapter plate. You will most likely need a tranny that comes from a 4 cylinder engine because of the size. Since Getrag is kind of an aftermarket company, some of their transmissions are likely to be the same for some cars using it's six speed. Now if you're worried about reliabilty and strength, check out the tranny from a Dodge SRT4. It should be the same series as yours, just a little bit stronger and geared differently. Unless you do autox, there really is no real advantage to getting a six speed. It's sixth gear ismost likelythe same as afifth gear in a 5 speed tranny, so you won't get any more top end speed out of it, just tighter gears. It's good for Autox, Bad for Drag racing. An extra shift in drag racing is definitely something you want to avoid.

Yeah, i'd go with SRT4 tranny. It already holds about 250hp stock....so it can probably take a lot more abuse. Plus it may just drop right in! I don't know if anyone's ever done it, but it's definitely possible.

The costs associated with making an eclipse with a 6-speed are just not worth it. Anything is possible but for the money its not worth it.

Well hey, maybe mopar released a six speed tranny for the ACR or R/T Neon's. I wouldn't doubt it, ACR neon's used to dominate the tracks back in the day. Maybe, maybe not, but it cold be a possibility.

a neon tranny and an eclipse tranny are completly differnt and it would be completly dumb to try to convert one.
