a no spark condition

My 1997 Galant quit today - no spark. I do not know this engine, used to drive BMWs in the past, please give a hint where to start? crank sensor? (where it is?) the car user to drive OK till this morning when it died all of a sudden. Maybe there is a way to access engine fault codes? ( i do not have a scanner yet)
