Default air intake questions

I was talking with a friend about cold air intakes (since I don't know so much) and he told me it's not worth the money. He's suggestion was to just get a K&N air filter and I'd be just as good.

That seemed a little weird to me so I thought I'd ask the guys on the forum

Also, I was wondering if there is a different between intake brands like Injen, Greddy, and AEM.... to cheaper brands like Ractive. I found an Ractive intake (I believe short ram?) here: http://www.carxpressions.com/perform...e_intakes2.htm for $53 ... I'm not going for a street racer, just a nice performance upgrade.

Any opinions will be appreciated.

Thanks.

A cold air intake IS going to help you. Have you ever notice the increase in performance in the cooler fall, than summer. Colder air is better for detonation. Hence why people use Nitrous.

Cold air is more dense than hot air because the molecules in cold air are packed closer together and move less than the hotter molecules which are bouncing around like crazy. You are getting more volume into the cylinders because of this principal. For Every 10 degrees you can lower the engines air temperature, you gain 1 percent power, Generally speaking.

Wait are we talking on a turbo car? because a cold air is non exitsant in that case sine the air be taken threw the filter go in to the compressor housing and gets heatted up so a drop in filter is just as good i guess except the restriction of the air box

You are correct. This estimate is only applicable on N/A cars. And now as I look at the picture, I see this is turbo plumbing. My mistake[sm=wakeup.gif]

It really doesnt help much with mnor modds. the stock intake is restickive but really you wont gain anything noticable by an intake on a turbo car other than the sound of SPOOOLL
