Alternative for Android Auto

Alternative for Android Auto
I just recently bought a 2017 Outlander SE with the Smartphone Link Display Radio. My problem is my phone is not new enough for Android Auto. My android phone only has Android 4.4.2 and Android Auto requires Android 5.0 or newer. My son's phone is newer so he installed Android Auto and it worked so I know the system is fine. I also can connect my phone through the Bluetooth connection and that works.
I tried installing Automate on my phone because someone posted on another forum that it was an earlier version of Android Auto. When I tried to connect to the radio with the USB cable I got the message that I needed to use a phone with Android Auto. Is there any other program that will let me connect my phone to the data radio so that I can use the navigation system on my phone.
As a possible other or maybe even better alternative is there a way to install a navigation program on the data radio? I know it already has a GPS because I can bring up a screen that shows my coordinates. But there doesn't appear to be any maps or other info with that page. I understand from reading on a couple of forums that earlier years of Outlanders actually had a navigation system built in. It seems strange they would drop that when the radio has so many other features.
Any help or info anyone can give will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Carroll
