Default problems hooking up amp

soooo... i recently got someone to put subs/amp in my car... and for some reason all the lights in the car (including head and tail lights) were blinking to the bass. then my car just died and wouldnt start til we shook the battery terminals. what's going on!? when i got the car it already had an older headunit in it that blinked when it was turned up loud. i have no idea what the problem is but i don't think its the battery because its fairly new...? i have the fuse out now so it's not taking any additional juice. can anyone help!?

thanks (:

i had the same problem, but on a Ford Escort, it is probably your alternator, that was my first thought but i dont think your sound system is powerfull enough to have your car die (how many watts is your amp?) ... that seems odd,
check your alternator, or maybe even buy a stronger one.
I bought a rebuilt alternator for my Escort, and the car ran fine and so did the system.

Did you charge your cap before using it?

Make sure the wire going from your battery to your amp is at least 4 guage power wire with at least a 60amp in line fuse. You also might want to get a new battery, especially if the one you have is older than 5 years. Just to point out once more that the power wire has to go DIRECTLY from the battery to the amp, if your friend spliced the power wire into your electrical system somewhere (like the lights) then you will have problems and possible a fire.

ya i would get a fraed cap and a deep cycle optima battery if that dosn't work can get a higher amped alternator, ya what gage (size) wire do u have running from your battery back?

im runing 2000watts and my lites would dim but not go out. all i had to do was get a fread cap and that fixed it but i already had a optima batt
