beef up my 420a
yea i know its the 420a but im one of few who believe this motor can do it and i know it can...my problem is i blew it up..im not worried about money so dont go and say get a gst or gsx..i want to keep my 420a..im considering getting a 5 speed but dont know how easy it is to convert the rest of my car to a manual...if i dont need a turbo i wont get one..i plan to find a motor and have it worked on at the machine shop unless i find one already worked on of course capable of good power...i know i can get new cam gears and crankshaft, and intake, and throttle body, and theres chips, and exhaust and headerand all the above but what would really help me get power from my 420a without a turbo..i know it can be done..those who have these motors please help me and tell me where youve seen great feedback with your mods..thanks

RE: beef up my 420a
i'm gonnn tell you exactly like it is b/c i was in your position before also. here's what i had done to my 420a'd eclipse:
AEM Cold Air Intake
OBX Racing Header
OBX 2.5" Intermediate Pipe
OBX High Flow Cat
Thermal R&D Cat-back Exhaust (from Hahnracecraft.com)
Greddy Grounding kit
Port and polished throttlebody
EGR Blockoff kit
Venom 400 Performance Chip
CI Motorsports Aluminum radiator
with all of this done i put down 111whp down on a local mustang dyno. now if you think that the $1600 that i put into my 420a justifes the whole.... i duno... 10whp that i got out of it than go for it. You won't find 1 person on here that will advise you to build the 420a though.... we aren't telling you to buy a gst or gsx BUT think about it this way.... to get ANY real power out of the car you will need:
cat back exhaust - 500
turbo - 400-1200
intake - 100-200
wastegate - 50-300
manifold - 200-500
downpipe - 150-350
o2 housing - 150-350
IC Piping - 100-400
FMIC - 150-900
BOV - 100-300
Wideband - 150-275
boost gauge - 10-100
clutch - 350-650
fuel pump - 100
injectors - 250-450
tuning device - 200-1500
allllll of these things add up to being capable of running 8-9lbs of boost which puts you right at 220-240whp. if you add the MINIMUMS of all of this you have a total of $2960.00 if you want to run anymore than this you will need:
forged pistons - 400-650
forged rods - 300-550
rod and main bearings - 150
machine / assembly / balancing - 150
this brings you to a total of - $3960.00.
This will allow you to run about 20lbs before you have to spend another apx 2-3k to rebuild the head. by this time it's time to upgrade the turbo, clutch, wastegate, and tuning device.
Here's the point of this whole thing.... you can buy a GS-T for under 4 grand.... which is the same amount of money you would spend JUST to be able to run boost in a 420a. so if you think this is justified, have fun and good luck. but if you have common sense... you'll just all together stop thinking about mod'ing your 420a for performance. build your car for show purpose, that is what they were meant for.

RE: beef up my 420a
Just so you know, from what i remember the worlds fastest 420a that was NA i think ran like a high14 sec 1/4 mile. Last i heard there was one guy still trying for the 13's. But this was with alot of money dumped in and the car was totally stripped. So what can you do with a NA 420a, thats about it. LOTS of money....still little gain. Sure 14's sounds pretty good, but for that much money i dont see the purpose when you can turbocharge it for less and be in the 14's. Not that im saying i would TC a 420a. Because i still maintain that its not worth the money

RE: beef up my 420a
As stated above, take your money and run. Invest in a GST or GSX, you will go faster with one of those in stock form with the "freebie" mods than you ever will with a NA 420A. Even if you go turbo 420A, you'll still be better off getting the GST or GSX.
Just some friendly and helpfull advice. But by all means do what ever you want, it's your money and your choice.
