Ok so my 94 mitsubishi 3000gt SL has a blown ALT 120a fusable link ... What are the odds that replacing only the fuse will work or do you think my alt is dead too ? I have a brand new batt and it starts with a jump but dies soon after, thanks

 

the point in fuses is that they blow before something expensive.
Check the circuit for shorts before replacing.

 

Thanks I got a circuit tester and I'm going to try to figure out if there's a short somewhere ... I'm thinking maybe when I hooked up my cig lighter and aux input that maybe set it off into a overload ... I did smell burning plastic like a couple weeks ago and couldn't find where it was coming from. Originally when I got the car these two things were not connected prob for this reason. But I wanted to use my aux to charge my phone so I hooked them back up and been that way now for 1 1/2 yrs ... Don't know where to start testing... Any recommendations , behind the tail lights ?

 

hah! Yeah a complete back to front check would do it.
No id check the wiring you did first. Loose earths, connections etc. Find that burning plastic.
Ground one side of your tester, key off, pull the acc fuse and start poking wires that arent black.

It could just be the age of the fuse, but if theres a short on the circuit you'll just keep blowing them.

 

Ok im frustrated now , I can't find any short in the wiring and I replaces the fusible link (120a alt)and still won't turn over... Is my new battery going to need to be charged or jumped or should it start right up ? Unless indeed the alternator itself is the problem ... But I'm just curious if I should try to put my batt on a charge , I have this battery charger /with starter thing . I guess I can jump start my car with it? , but I'm not sure how to use it .. I am about to take it to a garage and make it someone else's problem but they want $550-$600 to do it... Is that sound right or they just telling me that cause I'm a girl ?

Well The problem is was the alternator but I replaced it , so instead of a $600 garage bill I paid $388 for the part and fixed it myself . I suppose it was a fair quote they gave me. Any suggestions on why my tour sport may be flashing ?
