Default Prospective 1991 GTO owner

Basicly what the title says, i am looking at buying a already imported and inspected gto. the price is $5000 if i want it , he was asking 6500.

heres the known issues with the car:

sun roof glass needs to reattached to the glass
shifter **** is stripped out
rotors are warped(steering wheel shakes under braking)
interior is rough and some things need to be secured
there are some scrates on the pain
there are vaccume leaks(the y pipe is cracked and there are cracked vacume hoses elsewhere)
the car idles at 2000 rpm instead of 1000rpm, this happned since the clutch install. I think it might be due to old hoses(vac/boost leaks)
Speedo does not work, does not move at all.
power seat does move front and back

Other information:

The only repiar done recently was the clutch and the clutch seems to hold well. i think this lends itself to the spedo and vac leaks mentioned above.

There is a boost guage in the car, which only reads zero - does not go into vac or boost. this means its broken or not hooked up.

i am bringing my own boost guage and compression tester tomrrow to check the car out.

the owner did the clutch install himself in his garage.

ODO reads 125 000 kms. spedo is broken though

owner does not know if the timing belts have been done.

Active aero is not working on the rear.

so, i was wondering the following:

Do you think its worth 5000?if not, what is a fair price?

What is considered good compression on these motors?

What is the stock boost setting?

How can i tell if it was factory turbo or someone turbo'd it along the way?

How long do these motors usually last if daily driven? km range.

How much does a timing belt job cost at the dealer? the one repair i do not want to tackle myself on a unformiliar engine.


i have searched and foudn some info, but i am decided to buy or not buy this car tomrrow so i would like some opinions before i dive in. i very much apperciate any help anyone provides. My last (and currently parked car) was a single cam turbo ka 240sx. i turbo'd it myself and subsaqunety grenaded it myself lol.

It sounds like your going to buy someones headache, It wont pass smog so unless you want a money pit forget this one, you can buy running nice one for that much money.But mabe you really want it.

I wouldn't pay a dime more than $1200 for it. Walk away. For $5000 you can get a MUCH nicer TT/VR-4

Do not buy it.

$6,500 you can buy yourself a better used car or slighltly new car for that price.
Buy a new one no headaches just payment of $250.00 a month with a $6,500 down payment IF your credit is excellent.

You are not the first owner it is hard to figure out what part of the car that has to be fix. if you are the first owner you know what is going on with that car.

well here is a little help and or what prices should reasonably cost although in some cases it could be unpredictable.

sun roof glass needs to reattached to the glass
call safelite auto glass other than that no clue

shifter **** is stripped out
take the boot off and pull the peice that moves and has the threading on it get a bolt with similar threading and weld it on, grind it, paint it black, put it back in and itll be good if not better than new. i actually did this to my car so that i could powershift at higher rpms easier (5k-7k) by extending it up but the reason i had troubles with that may have been because the syncro was on its way out. =p

rotors are warped(steering wheel shakes under braking)

get a quote if you live in ohio i know a place that would give a fair price and does amazing work painter has painted and done body work for 20 years uses ppg products only and some of the ppg reps around here go to him for advice sometimes.

ebay y pipe costs 30$ itll do untill you crank your boost up get one with rolled edges.

i think the throttle cable adjustment is attached to the intercooler piping in the center under your hood (big silver square thingy is what ill call it since i cant think of the technical term for it ) its located furthest to the back give the cord a yank youll hear the motor rev find the adjustment and well... adjust it.

check for a blown fuse doubtful but possible clusters sell on ebay kinda cheap less than 100 or if i were you ide get a digital speedom like through prosport and install it.

N/A all i can say is look for specs and or pics and use that to compare

mine blew around 100k but ide imagine the idiot that had it before me couldnt drive worth a beans there is an art to driving a 4wd car

N/A i think they sell these aftermarket also but go to 3sx.com or ipsmotorsports.net and look for prices before you go to the dealer check all 3 before you buy tho. also google is your friend.

good luck gtos are hard to come by around here ive never seen one up close so i can see why you might buy it for that it isnt too bad a price if the transmission, turbos, and motor are good. 3000gt vr4s book for 12k in good condition average miles.

If your in the US don't buy that.

You can get a 3000GT or Stealth for the same price in better shape.

i have to agree with the folks above. dont do it keep looking something better will show up.
