Default Rings!

I'm up for suggestions. I had semi rebuild to my car. New valves, chrome rings. My rings have not seated yet ( burns oil ) after 1 year. Did not bore out because there was not a problem with anything. The reason for the chrome rings is I couldn't find factory cast ones. My bearings were fine also. How much is it going to cost me to get block bored out, new piston with cast rings. I don't really care about going faster than the next person, just tired of the burning oil! Am I going to need anything else? The car has about 10,000 miles on the rebuild. People tell me that them rings are very hard to seat.

Please any info would be helpful! I don't want to get rid of it.

Did you do the work yourself on the rebuild? One thing is if you didn't put the same pistons back into the same cylinder, they will never seat right without a leak. The other thing is if you wern't careful putting the rings on you could have caused damage there. Did you use proper tools or did you just use your fingers? To bore out cylinders is going to be pricy depended on the quality of pistons, and rings you get. But if your gonna have it at a machine shop I'd have them check the head to make sure that doesn't need and machining. Also pressure test it for cracks. If you did everything right you may not have a leak from the rings per say, it could be form a crack in the cylinder walls or something. Also is your timing right?

I had it done by a guy who has built a lot of motors for drag cars, so he knew what he was doing. At the time I didn't have the money to get it bored out, so he said I can take the chance to just put new rings in. I screw up my vavles replaceing timing belt, and it was buring oil anyway. So I got him to rebuild it for me. He told me that they might not seat, but I thought they would ( guess not ). I called around today and ask about how much, and I got an average around $2,000 to just bore it out one step above factory. I think I will just try to find a used motor!

Thanks anyway for the info!

Yes it is running great! I also toke it to dealership to make sure, and they said everything is fine. It only smokes when I take off from a dead stop. It's not really that bad, but you can imagine in the 80-90 degree heat in the summer!

What kind of head work did you have done?? Could it be your valve seals leaking?? Have you done a compression check on it?? I think the compression should be around 180+-. A compression check should tell you if your rings have seated. Something to check out before you write it off.
