I have a 94 Mitsubishi sw. My check engine light came on the other day so I pulled the car over to check and see if gas cap was on tight enough, check my oil level, listened if there was any noises coming from the engine and nothing seemed to be the matter. I don’t want to pay a mechanic for a diagnostic check so I’m wondering if anyone can give me some info on how to perform one myself. Any other information about my problem would be great!

 

Since OBDII didn't come out until 96, you will likely have to find the ECU plug to read with an analog voltmeter or MUT from the dealer.
1. Go to the fuse box on the driver's side and connect the analog voltmeter across the self-diagnosis terminal and earth terminal. (Normally top right is diagnostic and lower left is ground - BUT CONFIRM THIS FIRST)
2. Turn ignition swith ON
3. Read diagnosis output pattern from the voltmeter pointer diflection and record it.
4. Refer to diagnosis chart.
5. Erase code by turning ignition switch off and disconnect the negative battery terminal for more than 10 seconds.

That's because the Check Engine light comes to life if anything, and we do mean anything isn't 100% under the hood.This means that you could be staring at a major repair..so this post is really very useful to all of us..

 

Most people think disconnecting the battery doesn’t work, and their right. It appears the cars computer system has some time delayed reset. Disconnect the positive terminal of the battery only, wait 10-15 minutes, re-connect and the check engine light should be off.

 

after 24-50 miles of driving the check engine light will be on again after disconnecting it for 10-15 minutes. unless the real problem was solve it will keep on coming back.
