Default Platinum-tipped spark plug not recommended for Galant 03?

Hi,

Im new to the forum; tried searching about this topic but couldn't find similar thread. Sorry if it's been discussed before.

I'd like my spark plugs replaced on a 4cyl Galant 2003. My mechanic advised to get those platinum-tipped spark plugs but another mechanic from a Mitsubishi dealership once told me not to use platinum-tipped spark plugs on this car; i can no longer remember his explanation why.

Is this correct?

The owner's manual lists the following as replacements: NGK BKR5E-11, Denso K16PR-U11, Champion RC10YC4. I think these are all standard-type spark plugs. but the maintenance manual did mention about platinum-tipped ones so i wonder if that suggests it works ok for the Galant.

Appreciate any advise.

Thanks!

you're right, it's the 2.4L Galant, 4G64 engine. I was told platinum is ok for the V6 ones, but not for 4cyl.

the ONLY reason to use a platinum plug is to extend service intervals on cars with hard to reach plugs.. The V6 galant is like that.

they're a total waste of money on the 4 cylinder car, because it takes 5 minutes to change them.

Wrong answer friend!
It is too hard to explain you, becouse my english is not fluent. But there is many deference between Platinium, Iridium and usual spark plug. For example, V6-24 want platinium spark plug, because this engine is very powerfull and haevy. Here in europe we have an mitsubishi with 2.4cc/150hp GDi engine. This engine must drive with Iridium spark-plug this is the most strong and long-life spark plugs. Every each spark plugs have deferend faeture. If you change with the wrong you take the risk. First car will not drive fluentlly, and second you could brake whole el.grid!
Best wishes Niki from Bulgaria!

you have no idea what you're talking about.

There is NO FUNCTIONAL DIFFERENCE between copper plugs and those of rare elements, assuming the same heat range. The ONLY difference is the life of it.
That is it. This is not up for debate, because there is none.
but if you still think you're right (you're not), read this. http://www.babcox.com/editorial/cm/cm120032.htm

Dud, youare right only for one- there is no functional difference. But do you mean difference between 'Functionality' and 'Technical Characteristics" Do you know how importan is that?
Platinum spark plugs are better becacuse the fire better than the regular one'sl. But they dont use for every engine. Why....?
Becouse we cannot stress too strongly the need to give spark advance your closest attention, because excessive spark lead is the most frequent cause of detonation, which is a real engine killer!
