Default temperature gauge become erratic

Hi, my 2001 Gallant ES V6 which I just bought it 3 weeks ago has problem with the temperature gauge.
From time to time it seem like being disconnected so it's pointing to the bottom end, but sometime it going back up
to the middle.
The heater is working fine, and the collant seem to be fine too.
Any ideas?? thanks!

Have you checked the wire that goes to the coolant temp sensor? It sounds like a connection problem to me.

Thanks silvercoupe,
I think so, but I haven't been able to check it.
I didn't know which one is the temp sensor, but I'm getting the book tonight so I will check it.
