Default "check engine" light

First of all, it's a nice looking forum you have here! I'm looking forward to learning a lot of stuff from here.

Anyway, the check engine light comes on after about 5 minutes of driving.
The car seems to be running fine and as far as I can tell there isn't anything wrong, but then again I don't know much about cars.
So how can I find out whats wrong? And since everything seems to be working fine is this something I need to worry about?

The car is a mitsubishi lancer, 1.5L, 1990. If you need any other info about the car just ask.

Go to antozone and tell them they will scan your ECU.

Agree with Sebba...It could be something or it could be nothing. Pretty much any car shop you go to can check that light. It might just be something simple that needs to be replaced, but you won't know until u get it checked out.

So there is no way to check it by yourself?

yeah you can buy an OBD scanner. However, you can go to AutoZone and get it scanned for free though.

well I don't live in the USA so I don't know if it's possible for me to get a free scan over here.
But I'll see how it goes, if the light is still there after a week or so then I'll probably go around asking if one of the local shops will scan it for free.

Thanks for your help!

I'm from Finland.

anyway, today had some start up problems with the car, but once I got the engine running it was fine. I'll go to a local car shop and see if they will scan it for free. If not then I guess I'll start messing around with the starter/start engine. (or whatever the proper english word is)

thanks for your help again!

How many miles do you have on the car?
I have about 170,000 and the Maintenance Required light used to stay on that is until I found out that for my 93 Montero, being final assembled in Japan, were not meant to go over 100,000 miles so the light was a terminal "on" after that mark was met. So, I just removed the instrument panel and removed the light. Problem solved.
