Default 2003 Lancer 142K Tuneup

I work with a girl who has a 2003 Lancer automatic that's got about 142K miles on it. She has never done anything to the car. She said the car has 50 something thousand miles on it when she got it. So 90K miles at least and nothing has been done to the poor car. We're talking like no oil changes, no filters, no plugs or wires, no timing belt, nothing. She once bought spark plugs for it but couldn't figure out how to install them and lost them.

Anyways I've agreed to do a small tuneup on it including air filter, oil change and filter, plugs and wires. Which comes to around $90 at autozone.

Then I started thinking, what about the timing belt? That thing is probably original. I told her about how it needs to be replaced probably every 60K miles and I found this kit on ebay with the water pump, crank seal, two accessory belts, cam seal, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, valve cover gasket, and spark plug tube seals for $170 shipped. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Anything else? Thank you very much! I don't want her belt to snap and toast her valves. She's got 5 kids and needs that car to get to work.

I recommend to buy the OIL SEAL TOO just in case you break it while replacing the serpentine belt.

if you will do it GOODLUCK. you need to adjust the valves too which is another pain the butt.

I recommend for her is to BUY ANOTHER CAR and make it 2009 Lancer.

get all original parts from Mitsubishi the want her VIN number to MATCH the parts for her car and water pump alone will cost $150.00

I see. Well, take into consideration thatshe's not gonna buy another car because she can hardly seem to come up with the money to fix this one. I looked in her owners manual and it says to replace the belt at 100K miles and she's had it since 50K so I doubt it's ever been changed but at least it wasn't 60K like I thought it would be.

I'll find out how much all this will be from the dealer but it's gonna be expensive and I don't know if I could convince her to do it.

I checked mitsubishiparts.com and the total for everything in that ebay auction came to around $430 shipped and that's not including the spark plug seals because I couldn't find them in the parts catalog. It's gonna be tough to convince her to spend $430 on genuine mitsibishi parts vs $170 for the same aftermarket parts.

What do you think it would cost to have the timing belt changed and anything else that needs to be done with a timing belt change at the dealership?

You dont have to get oem parts for every little thing, just the timing belt, balance shaft belt and pulleys.

Plug wires are coil on plug. You pretty much named most of the stuff and I don't think I could find the other stuff on ebay nor would I really save any money on that little stuff anyways. Basically just go OEM on everything. The little stuff is cheap.
