Default "Fail-safe" questions on a 1996 Mirage

Here is the deal. I just put a brand new 1.5L engine in my Mirage and just like most cars I have done engine changes in, the check engine light is on. So, I looked in the Chilton's (or Hayne's) for hte car and figured out how to get my codes without a scan tool. No Problem, Wrong...It said to drive it around till the Tranny went into "fail-safe" mode, but did not tell me how to do that. I don't even know what "fail-safe" mode is. Neither does my father. It is a 3-speed automatic. If someone can explain "fail-safe" mode and tell me how to put the tranny in this mode it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
