Default 02 Montero AWD problem

Hi all

My mother has an 02 Montero Sport AWD that is having some problems. It won't go at all in AWD. It acts like the tranny is slipping, but it acts fine in 4H other than the fact the front wheels won't spin. Where do we start? I hope it isn't the transfer case...... Hope everyone has a great weekend.

a couple revisions: The front wheels aren't locked up or anything. It just is 2 wheel drive right now (even in 4L) due to the problem. The 4x4 light comes on, then flashes after a while.

Guy, Welcome to the forums.

Are you getting any codes with your "slipping" problem? I'd recommend checking the simple stuff first: codes, fluid levels/condition in transfer case & transmission (both auto or manual), integrity of 4WD signal switches in transfer case (on side opposite speedo cable attachment) and vacuum hose condition going to canister on front differential free-wheeling clutch assembly. Solenoids and vacuum lines for this are located on passenger side engine compartment wheel well. Resistance of disconnected switches across terminals should be between 36 ~ 46 ohms.

See if any of these things bring results, and let us know what you find.

OK, we'll deal with ol' #5 misfiring as a separate issue. Now, what about all that other stuff I said?

Well I messed around & broke where the speedometer cable plugs into the transfer case .............. Is this a dealer only part or can I order at any parts store?

BTW. all fluids are fine. I think it's going to the mechanic.

Sorry to hear that. So what broke? Was it the speedometer cable itself or the gear sleeve that attaches to the transfer case.

Those are available here, but I'm not certain if this is an accurate Mitsubishi PN for your model.

Perhaps a call to your local dealer can clear that up for you.

I would love to think that a speedometer cable could be ordered at your local auto parts store, but I honestly don't know. One call can clear up the matter; then we'll both know.

You might also find joy at a local auto wrecker, if they have a similar model lying around awaiting your surgical touch. Again, time to man the phones!

If you feel you must take her in to a mechanic, there's nothing wrong with that. But make sure you did all those things I recommended before spending your money on expensive diagnostics. Your trouble may well indeed be in your transfer case, but it could also be something relatively simple.

I hope that it is, and either way, let us know what you find out, OK?

Wow, I really couldn't say, as the price varies according to location. I'd do a quick scan of your local CL and take it from there.

Here's an 02 with 86K in Albuquerque at a dealer for $6400:

And an 01 with a salvage title for $4400, but with mucho miles:

Thinking of jumping ship?
