02 montero sport

Looking for a parts breakdown book, Trying to read up on changing front wheel bearings. 112000 miles, it is time. Anyone already find any books?

Check the dealer for a Factory Service Manual. Your best bet. I've purchased both the FSM as well as a Haynes and an ebay "mechanic's" cd manual. None were anywhere near as complete as the FSM.

the bearings on a sport NEVER need replacing. At best, repacking (which is also a waste of time on a sport).

trust me, they do not need anything.

May be true but if you're doing the work yourself, it's worthwhile to inspect them for wear at least and I'm sure alot will depend on where the vehicle is used and how well maintained it is. For example in areas where salt is used on the roads in the winter versus say a Southern California rig.

Well, you must know something about the hub assembly then. On the drivers side there is play in the hub just like the bearings are worn, no play on the passengerside, unless there is a new space age bearing set in the montero sport, all bearings are subject to wear/defects. I would prefer to have an illustrated parts breakdown to make sure everything is where it is supposed to be.

I do happen to know something about them, as Ive worked for mitsu for 16+ years. If you feel the "play" in the bearing is excessive, tighten them.
but rest assured, ALL sports have a small bit of play in the bearings, and the bearings are so large and strong that the chance of failure is about the same as the car getting struck by lightening.
