Default 1989 Montero is overheating.

In the summer time only, and when thoroughly warmed up, the only way I can go after leaving a store is to prop the hood open. This is a pain, and I'm getting up in age so when I forget, I'm stuck waiting for an hour or more for the car to decide to let me go. Eventually the Montero decides to let me go on my way. Any ideas?

Based on the age, I'd say its possible that your radiator has reduced flow. If you have a shop in the area that specializes in radiators, you can take it off and have them clean/descale it. They will pressure test it to make sure there is no leaks and flow test to confirm that its good and meets specs.
Of course the other suspect can be a failing coolant pump. I'm pretty sure its one of those two.

Thanks HunterD. I'll try that. I have a radiator shop here in Colorado Springs.
