1999 Montero Ignition Control Module or Capacitor?
I was helping a friend on his 1999 Montero with the 3.5 Single Overhead Cam V6. He made an attempt at replacing the valve seals (with engine installed), and dealing with those darn "keepers" which hold the valve springs in place is a royal pain. Maybe I should do a separate thread on that ordeal.
After getting the engine all back together, he has the "Crank-No Spark-No Start" issue. It ran fine before working on the engine. There is no spark coming out of the three coil paks, and a bizarre voltage of only about 6 volts going to the coil paks. We finally noticed that the "flux capacitor", with a real name of "Ignition Capacitor" had worn wires coming out of it which had finally broken away. Here is a picture: The wires had broken away, and we believe this is why the coil paks are not producing spark. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/mitsubi...c53ae8a7a2.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/mitsubi...83a681a0f9.jpg The strange thing is that we cannot find this part number (250/0.47 N78C L) anywhere. Also, the parts suppliers do not show anything like this. Anyone know if this part is supposed to be used with this engine? The original owner could have substituted this wrong part year ago. My 1994 Monteros have an Ignition Control Module and does not have this little capicitor. Is it possible that this 99 Montero is also supposed to have the Ignition Control Module that looks like this?: (This is the part that comes up at Rock Auto and other parts stores): If someone has a 99 Montero, let me know what you find under your hood. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/mitsubi...6ec48617e5.jpg |
UPDATE: Actually, the 99 Montero does have the Ignition Control Module, identical to the one on my 94 Montero. However, I found out that my 94 has the wierd "Ignition Capicitior or Ignition Transistor" right at the end of a plug that plugs into the Ignition Control Module. For some reason, Mitsubishi changed it for 99 and made it totally seperate from the ICM. After many hours researching for this little part, he finally found a Mitsu. dealer who blew off the dust on some old books, inserted a floppy drive disc, and went back to the Fortran punch cards to find that the part did exist, and there were only 5 left in the country. So, grab them while you can if you have a 99 Montero.

Great job figuring out the answer to the mystery. The original part in your photo looks like it has wires all melted. Did it short out somewhere?

I guess the Prior Owner had it parked beside that old DeLorean outside the church bell tower when the bolt of lightning struck.......good for the flux capacitor in the DeLorean and the mad scientist, but bad for the Ignition capacitor/transistor in the Monty.
It looks like someone had put some type of black glue/compound all over the wires.....and it lasted a long time like that, but it finally "gave up tha ghost". |
Ignition control module thingy.
I know this is a long shot, but the exact same thing just broke on my 2000. Does anyone remember a part number for this capacitor/module? Thanks.

Well, what part number is stamped on your defective part? Is it the same 250/0.47 number?
|
Sorry. Yes it is the same. But I can't find anything online used or new. Would Mitsubishi have a different part number? Like a MR something. Not skilled in finding things like this.

Andrew......I will do some checking and get back to you. I guess that I should have been more effecient in the prior posts and given the name of the supplier.

Thank you. Any help is greatly appreciated.
