Default 2000 Montero Sport timing belt replacement

I've read all of the posts on this site about Montero timing belt replacements. The owners manual for this truck recommends the timing belt to be replaced at 60,000 for Monteros sold in California, Massachusetts and Vermont. For Monteros sold in all other states it says to change the timing belt at 100,000 miles. Are the engines different for the different states? Or possibly are they concerned that the engine doesn't run as clean as the timing belt wears? And why does Mitsubishi recommend waiting until 100,000 miles to change the timing belt if its unlikely to last that long? Since the owners manual was printed for my 2000 Montero Sport has there been a lot of unexpected engine failures due to timing belt failures? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

IIRC it's due to state regulations rather than actual lifespan of the belt. They do easily last 100k.

You've got it backwards. For the 47 states it is 60k interval, for cali, Ma, etc it is 100k.

I changed the belt on my '95 when it had 90k and 5 years on it. It looked like new when it came off.

Default Timing Belt for 2000 MMS LS, 4WD

Hi, recently I bought 2000 MMS LS, 4WD whatever. I have 85500 milesat my odometer. It is one owner car running in Virginia. Probably the owner did not change the time belt.
Engines,belt-driven, can be classified as either free-running or interference, depending on what would happen if the piston-to-valve timing is disrupted.Does somebody know which type of engineis in 2000 MMS LS, 4WD?
Thanks for the answer in advance.

Monterovalves will definitely hit the pistons if the belt breaks........there are many posts about this.

I once messed up a TB job on my '95 3.0L.
Trust me, they are interference motors.
All I did was try to start it. The result: 10 bent valves.

IF I had done like I was supposed to and tried to turn the crank manually before starting it I MIGHT have caught my mistake, but I did eventually get things back in order after 10 extra hours of work and $500 for having the heads rebuilt.

If one broke going down the road...eww. NOT good.

(Hi Liquid_force, I just replaced my water pump, and I tried turning the crankshaft and it turns a quater of the way and then its really hard, I am guessing something moved in the process. Do you know how to get everything back in place? or fix this issue? My mitsubishi montero sport is a 2000 model....

thank forany advice.
