2001 montero sport xls
hey guys,
i just inherited a 2001 montero sport xls v6 3.0L engine from my father in law who just got tired of it(because he is enjoying his armada).
problem though, it does run..... i think it is the oil pump cause the heads kinda sound like they are scratching the surrounding metal. so i wanna replace the pump. i have no idea how to do it on my own but i wanna try it.
my father in law states that i need to do it from the bottom, removing the stabalizer bar, muffler and what not. however i think it should be tackled from the top removing all parts in my way.( radiator, fan, belts, etc.)
please help!!!! how can i replace it.

Is your oil pressure warning light on? Have not heard much about pumps failing on these engines and if yours is you'd have a lot more troubles than some scraping noises. Like an immediately seized engine. Have your oil pressure checked if you don't have a guage.
Where is the noise coming from? If from the front by the fan there is a fairly common problem with the pulleys that adjust the belt tension for the A/C and Power Steering. They make a squealing sound when the bearings are shot. Easily replaced.
Also, it would help if you indicated the mileage.

See if the noise is coming from the belts at the front of the engine toward the battery side. If so try the steps in the thread below. If not, then I'm not sure what to suggest. In any case, have the oil pressure professionally checked before you start tearing apart anything to get to the pump. If the pump was shot you'd have a warning light and a lot more damage that some scratching noise.
