I just picked up a 2002 Montero Limited with 49,400 miles on it. It has a squealing noise in the brake that was easy to diagnose as the brake booster from detailed descriptions in many threads. I also found there was a recall for 2001 and 2002 Monteros for this exact issue. Recall number is 01V254001.

When I go to the Mitsubishi website and enter my vin, or when I call the dealer, the results are the same: They say that the recall does not apply to my vehicle. Not sure why not. 2002 is listed. I have the failure....but the customer service rep told me there was nothing I can do. Anybody know if there is anything I should do? Do recalls expire? the vehicle is 18 years old.

Otherwise I think I'll just order it online and replace it myself. Need to read more about bleeding the antilock brakes first.

Recall is for one time replacement. It is likely that PO already done it and that's why your vehicle does not apply. I've replaced my BBA under recall and then 10 years later had to do it "out of pocket" when it failed again. Order a replacement and do it yourself. It is probably one of the easier repairs. I can find instructions for it if needed.
