Default 2002 Montero Limited Fuel Meter

This forum has been so very useful to me and I would like to say thank you to all who have been so gracious to answer questions to issues that others are having with their vehicles. I have fixed several problems with my Montero using these forums. To this end, I have a problem that I haven't been able to find an answer to via this Mitsu forum or hours of Google searching..

The miles to empty is stuck at after multiple fill-ups (showing 420 or something). I have reset it using the ignition key/adjust method which also resets the compass but it gets stuck again at the next fill-up. The fuel gauge works just fine - it's only the miles / distance to empty with the problem. Any ideas? Thank you all in advance!

You have to re-set it and let it run through several fill-ups. It will get back to close to accurate. The best way to do it is to fill up the tank completely. Disconnect the battery and leave it off for half a day or overnight. When you connect the battery, the miles to empty will show the default number (you'll need to reset your compass, clock and radio). Then after few empty tanks and refills miles to empty will be close to where your fuel consumption is.
