If too much oil was put in there you could most likely tell be looking at it on your dipstick; it would look frothy. When too much oil is put in the crankcase it rises to the level of the crankshaft which at that point acts like a butter churn, mixing air in with the oil — hence the frothy appearance. This is, as you might guess, not a good thing in the lubrication department. So the pressure would have to go somewhere, but there are more likely escape routes than out through the top of your #3 cylinder. Head gaskets, oil pan gaskets and oil pressure relief valves all suggest themselves as more likely candidates in this situation.
It could be just as you said, that #3's spark plug wasn't tightened down properly and after all those little explosions underneath it combined with upward piston pressure finally sent it skyward.

If anyone is using the tradebit link, I ran into trouble with it, tried three times, so wrote the guy and he is great about getting back to you in a hurry. He sent me the direct link and finally success. I found what I needed in the 6G74 file which is the right engine. Steps and points included. One file seems to be in Spanish, but maybe there is English too. I have sent an email to ask. But alas, there is a PDF file on the 2001-2002 Montero!
It was faster than the Haynes since the mail brings it.

I was able to find a FREE pdf of the 2002 montero sport service manual thanks to ukrcan. I just downloaded it and the link still works as of this post. Btw, it contains other model years as well.

Only $10.99 The guy says it contains my motor, the 3.5L, whereas the others I downloaded though said they were 2002 turned out to be 2000 and 2003.

Between them I should figure it out. It turns out that, my guess is, when the plugs were changed number 3 was not tightened down. It popped right out off the whole wedging it under plenum. I got it out and plug is fine, threads are fine. Maybe over time vibration? Would this occur if my son put too much oil in? He says no as tube separates plugs from valves.
Anyway if you have an idea what caused it I would like to know. I can't see any other damage. But should I keep looking?

I am looking for a manual for 2001 Montero xls full size to do a head gasket job. Was this download better than the Haynes? I have tried to download from mitsubishilinks and it will not work for me.

I am an owner of a Mitsubishi Montero 2002 3.5 Limited, because of this, I am looking for a full service manual. I have the one for the later version with engine 3.8 it was easy to find on the Internet but I can't find the previous version.
