Mitsubishi Montero & Montero SportThis sport utility vehicle offers more size than the other Mitsubishi SUVs, but manages to keep a sporty look and comfortable feel, unlike many larger SUVs.
Hey everyone,
Just bought a 2002 Montero Sport a few months ago and am doing timing belt + pulleys, water pump, valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, cam seals, etc., but got held up trying to get the crank pulley off.
Looking around I’ve noticed my pulley is completely different from anything online, however I did find it for sale on eBay, so I’m wondering if this is some aftermarket garbage… however, I’m the second owner, and the previous owner obviously took good care of it, having shops do all the work on it, so I’m not sure why they’d throw this thing on, yet it looks original…
The eBay crank pulley link is at the bottom of this post
Obviously the normal 6G72 crank pulley tool won’t work with this, so how would you guys recommend I remove it?
Nothing super special about removing the pulley. Just take out the big bolt and it should slide forward. That bolt design is the old style. Some people had trouble removing it. Occasionally it would seaze to the crankshaft and brake off. Just be careful when removing it - apply force steady and perpendicular to it, don't go cockeyed on it. New style bolt is available to replace it.

The problem is I can’t remove it, and I also don’t want to break it like you mentioned. I’ve used a torque wrench, impact drill, the crankshaft pulley locker tool, penetrating oil, and nothing is budging it. I have the new bolt for replacement. Any suggestions? I don’t want to use heat as there’s too many flammables all around, and I don’t have access to a pneumatic impact drill.
What is described below is NOT approved by manufacturer NOR by any safety company conscious organization... Take a long 1/2" breaker bar (18-24" long), set it in such a way that it will be almost touching or touching the driver side frame of the vehicle or the driver side fender. DO NOT HOLD it in your hand. With everything in position, get inside the vehicle and turn the engine with the starter for just half a second. Literally, you just need to bump the engine. 99% of the time it will loosen that bolt and then you can take it off by hand. That was the only way I was able to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt on my Montero without any power tools.

Wow 😂 Brilliant, I do have one more thing I’ll try first, but if it doesn’t work then I’ll try this, thank you!
