Default 2002 montero sport limited 4X4 trans light flashing.

I recently purchased a 2002 Montero sport limited editon 4X4 with 46000 miles on it. Well about 2 weeks after the worinty went out on it my trans lock light started blinking. It only does it on long drives, once you have been on the road for 30 to 45 minuts the light starts blinking. If you shut the vehicle off and restart it the light goes out but will come back on in anouther 20 to 30 minuts. I need to know if this is something I should be concerned with and if there is something I myself can do to rectify the problem. I dont actually know what the light means. Manuel just says if light is flashing you cant shift into 4X4. and if persists take to dealer witch I cant afford. Any help with this problem would be greately appricated. Thanks.

Thank you very much for your help. Hopefully the article will be of some assistance. Doesnt quit cover my exact problem but it gives me a place to start atleast. This is the first vehicle that I paid more than $500.oo for. More than anything I just want to make sure me driveing it with a flashing light doesnt cause damage I really cant afford to fix. I dont have the problem rideing around town, just when I go on trips be it 50 miles or 200 miles. Thanks again.

you need to have the codes pulled out of the super-select 4wd system.
there are a multitude of potential problems, but the most common (in fact, the only) problem is corrosion of one or more of the 5 select switches on top of the transfer case.
when one is corroded, generally mitsu recommends replacing all of them.

Thanks For the info. I will check that out also. I took a road trip today about an hour and a half drive probably. Went up the coast line inwitch most speed limits were between 35 and 45 mph. The fastest I got up to going on this trip was 60mph. Now my light never came on. However on the way home I took the highway and ran 70 for a short distance at witch 20 minuts later the light started flashing. So I am thinking maybe it is speed related because it doesnt do it in town. It would seem it only happens when you exceed speeds of 65mph. I dont know if this info means anything to anyone but there it is. And again thanks for yalls help.

if you have 4wd or awd on your montero sport and uneven tire tread on your tires then this will cause your 4H light to constantly blink
