2002 Montero XLS Rear End
134,000 miles.... I heard a whine from the right rear only in reverse. I was told by Pep Boys its probably the rear diff as brakes are fine. Took it to a trans shop who replaced the rear diff bearings and seals. He told me after 500 miles the pinion and gear will wear all the same and the sound will go away.
Now almost 2,000 miles later the right rear is screaming from slow acceleration, even worse when wet. I brought it back to the trans shop when the diagram on the dash only shows the right rear wheel lit up in 2WD. Its not the hub bearings, its not the brakes, they are trying to figure out what's going on. Anyone have an idea or similar issue?
Thanks
Liz

Well, it's been a long time since I rebuilt a diff, (but I've got a great memory), if a mechanical part sounds/acts incorrectly it will NOT heal itself.
I suspect something with the right rear abs sensor - since it's tripping the light.
you already have history with this "trans shop" - I'd push them to repair it free since the original issue was never resolved.
If not, take the vehicle & repair documents to a different shop (not pboys).
there's not much excuse for not finding a mechanical issue IMHO
