What's your mileage? If a six year old Montero has never had the spark plugs and wires replaced, that's likely your problem. Parts are reasonable but it's a relatively big labor project. See: http://www.monterosportonline.com/diy-perf2.html

It's not a foolproof check, but get your car in total darkness, let your eyes adjust and look around the wires to see if there is electrical arcing when the engine is reved up. No 1 spark plug is almost directly below the oil filler cap so you might check to see if there's a lot of oil on the wire and plug connector.

It's exactly as it says, misfire in cyl. 1.

As stated above, check spark plug and wires as the most obvious.

Too bad its a PITA to change em.

Ron,

Is there a similar link for the Ltd? or is the procedure about the same?

Good question.

I'm only familiar with the 3.5l engine in my '99 full size - which is the same as the one in the instruction link. I suspect the major parts of the project are the same but can't guarantee.

Can someone here with a later model answer this question?

I do know on the 3.8 you have to pull the intake manifold to get at the plugs. Yes, a big PITA for the shadetree machanic.
