I started noticing a screeching noise when the AC was on, and within an hour or so it stopped blowing cold. Now, if I look at the front of the compressor, if the AC is off, the compressor spins. If the AC is on, then the compressor stutters and moves in fits, not a smooth spinning. Could this simply be a lubrication issue, or will I need to replace the compressor?

 

I have the same issue on my 2000. Is it a bad compressor?

 

In my case it was belt related and the wheel on the compressor wasn't properly connected, they ordered a replacement part and the cost to replace it was like $100. The screeching was the wheel vibrating and being loose, and once it was replaced and tightened it was OK.
