Default 2H vs 4H for everyday …

Hi there,

I’m new to this community, recently purchased a used (great condition) 2002 Montero Limited, so I’m just getting my bearings, and I want to know what the heck I’m doing, not pick up any bad habits.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading about the Super Select FT 4WD usage, want to prevent transmission/engine damage, etc.

Anyway, since I’m in Los Angeles (will probably do some offroading a year from now after I do some modifications), but for now, regarding everyday driving, it seems to me — from everything I have gathered from forums, videos, articles — the rule of thumb for me would be, use 2H for freeway driving, use 4H for city streets. Would y’all say this is a good rule of thumb for a place like Los Angeles?

(The reason why this is especially confusing is according to the Mitsubishi handbook, it seems to suggest that 2h is the everyday standard, but from a lot of the articles I’ve read, it seems that 4H shouldn’t be so easily dismissed for everyday driving.)

Thank you, thank you!

As long as you have Super select, then 2H or 4H is fine, 4H should increase your fuel economy, but that isnt always the case. I personally use 2H most of the time, but if its wet then i select 4H. I also use 4H when i am towing my trailer

On Super Select transmissions both 2H and 4H modes are good for driving everyday. I live in Northern US, so my rule is - Sumner 2H, Fall and winter 4H. Also, Montero owners manual recommends using 4H mode when towing a trailer. I guess that is done in order to not overload any individual halfaxle.

I have a 2001 Limited. I switched it to 4H well over a year ago and have left it there. Wet, dry, highway, trails, wherever. Been terrific.

I had the same question you did and it's my understanding that 4H is the "default" for this system and it does share some similarities with an AWD system. I'm no expert, though, just my $.02.

You're correct - on Super Select transmissions 4H. Is equivalent of the AWD system. It can be used year round on pavement. Escellent design by Mitsubishi engineers.

Nor all Full size Monteros have super select transfer case. There was an oprion for a simpler version, but I have no idea if that was sold in US
