Mitsubishi Montero & Montero Sport This sport utility vehicle offers more size than the other Mitsubishi SUVs, but manages to keep a sporty look and comfortable feel, unlike many larger SUVs.

Default 4WD vs. AWD?

When searching for a nice 2002-2004 Monty, are AWD and 4WD options for these years? Whether or not, is it recommended to stay away from one or the other?

I’m making my list of what I want and what to avoid and would like input on this driveline question.

thanks.

All Monteros have both of these options. There are actually 4 different drive modes in Montero:
2H - rear wheel drive
4H - All wheel drive (both axles engaged but center differential is not locked)
4HLc - True 4WD - both axles engaged, center differential locked
4LLc - Low range 4WD - both axles engaged, center diff locked, transfer case in low range.

Thank you Hunter for your reply.

I've seen photos of Montero Sports for sale and all (that I have seen) have 3 positions for the "drives":

4L
4H
AWD (definitely not "4WD")

See:

AWD is "not locked center diff"?

To cloud the issue even more, I see that in the Sport brochure you linked to, the choices are 2WD or "All4WD". Is this locked center diff? Or not?

You can see why I ask these questions, I hope...

Thanks.

Totally understand why you are asking the questions. No problem at all with this. I guess Montero Sport have different options for transmission. I I'd say the only kind of Montero you need to stay away from is the one that comes ONLY with 2WD. I think a bunch of those were sold in California and I've never seen a more "helpless" Montero than a 2wd kind on ice in our area

iXod and Hunter: Sorry for my late response. I could be wrong, but I thought that none of the Montero Sports had the preferred 4x4 options that the 90 - 2000 Monteros had, with the optional Rear Diff. Lock and Center Diff Lock. I think that all of the Montero SR models had the rear diff. lock option, and some of the Montero LS models may have been ordered with it. (If you see an orange sticker down near the gas pedal, it has the rear diff. lock).

Hunter, do you know when Mitsubishi stopped offering the Rear and Center Diff Lock?

My knowledge of early Monteros is very likely less than what you know So I would gladly rely on your info.
I know that full size Montero sold in US from 2001 model year do NOT have rear locking differential (they are all LSD). Center differential on those models is lockable, resulting in AWD and 4WD options. I think some of the later Montero Sport (past 2001 year) models also have same lockable center diff. But I honestly don't know if any of the newer Sport models have rear locking differential option. It is an aftermarket option you can put in yourself. I will put one into mine if I ever buy another vehicle for my wife and then she'd let me make my Montero into a mountain monster

Hunter.....Well, I sure have alot more to learn before I am an expert on these rigs....maybe in a few years.

I agree with you about "building a Montero Mountain Monster"......a bad *** Triple M, maybe kinda like this one: If you ever watched "4 Wheel Drive Action" on Youtube, then you will get a ton of great build ideas, including the rear mounted sliding Waeco cooler.....thats a real good series to watch, no commercials, great action, and you can learn a ton about off-roading. I would like to turn one of my more "worn-out" rigs into a good off-roading rig also........maybe someday.

In the wild Mad Max movie, this nice guy probably had those twin "duck call" vacuum modulators up inside his air hoses: I guess he sucked air in thru the hoses, with a duck noise, then had to breath the foul air out thru his nasty teeth.

How would you like to see a Montero cruising down the road with this cat behind the wheel? Ha ha, quack-quack!
