Default 87 Raider Black Smoke

I've got the 2.6 with Mikuni FBC, I replaced the carb about 5 years ago at the same time I did a complete rebuild on the engine. I drove the Raider from Arizona to Michigan right after the rebuild, it ran ok but for some reason was really lacking in top-end power (I couldn't get it to go faster than about 80, and that was downhill with the wind behind me). It's been sitting here ever since, because I've been living overseas. While I was away mice got into it and ate some wires and vacuum hoses, I repaired all of that and hopefully got everything in it's right place, but it runs so bad now I can't even drive it. It belches thick black smoke at idle, and when it's revved up it backfires and pukes out even thicker black smoke. Obviously there is way too much fuel in the combustion chambers. I pulled the carb and took it apart (removing as little as possible, I hate this thing with all the little parts and stuff), it was clean inside. I pulled all the jets and cleaned them, including the main and pilot air jets and the enrichment jet. They weren't really dirty anyway. Put it back together and it runs the same, won't even idle. What could be going on here? I have always suspected that the distributor may be bad, but I don't know that it could cause these kind of symptoms. Hope someone can help, I want to get this fixed up so my sister has something to drive.

Timing is right on, and I am 99% sure all the vacuum hoses are in the right place. Judging by the amount of black smoke and the way it runs, I really don't think it could be a vacuum hose.

it's definitly not a vacum hose, sounds like a bad ditributor. Mixed with bad timing. Your obviously running way to rich . This may be cause by no firing in the combustion chamber due to little or no spark. You also stated that the car wont idle, another common problem leading to the distributor. Change it, clean the carb out completly, re-tapper your spark plugs because im sure their' fouled out, and advance your timming just a bit and your problem should go away. If not comeback and i'll suggest something else.

Sebba i know why you would say a vacum hose, because that's what i thought in the first place. But then i remembered it was carberated, so that threw that suggestion out the window.lol

a failed bowl vent valve is probably your problem.

try driving without the airbox on the carb and see if it improves.

I'm looking for a distributor, does anyone know if one off a Caravan 2.6 will work (front wheel drive vs. rear/4X4)?
