If the ticking is completely in tune with engine RPM- it is likely your hydraulic lifters making noise. If the ticking is at a constant speed independent from engine RPM- it could just be your EVAP purge solenoid - which is normal.

There's a TSB from Mitsubishi involving cleaning the lash adjusters/lifters in diesel fuel. Submerge them in diesel fuel and work the plunger inside the oil port up and down with a heavy gauge pin. I haven't tried it myself, but the only other option would be to replace them.

Unhappy lifters making noise "occasionally"

I have an 03 Montero Sport with 177K miles. I just bought it and love it, but I'm worried about the lifters/tappets??? the sound is in line with the engine rpm so I know its in there somewhere. I just don't know enough about the Montero... Has anyone had a similar problem and if so, what did u do to stop it? Is it really dangerous to keep driving it without fixing it? I'm not even sure where the lifters are. I think they are involved somehow with the firing in the valves, right? Please, help if you can...
Thanks!!!
