advise needed on possible purchase of montero
hey all. seeking advice on a purchase. i've been eyeing on a 1991 montero LS 4 door, manual. the owner says that it drives well even though the power steering is shot. before i go ahead and purchase, my question is this worth the buy, can i really drive the monty without major issues?
thanks,

What are you going to pay for it? The 1st Gen montero's are pretty reliable but there are a few weak area's...
1) Engine valves and/or valve guide seals will be worn (excessive smoke when starting or after idling for 5 minutes or more).
2) Engine may need rebuilding. Instead of a compression check, have a leak down test done.
3) 4wd will be difficult to engage if they didn't engage it regularly. Replace transfer case fluid before putting in 4wd. Also auto hubs may fail if not maintained and lubed regularly. Re-lube if necessary before putting into 4wd. If they are bad, replace with manual hubs for better long term reliability.
4) Electrical system: well anything is possible at this age. Be prepared (psychologically) for possible problems.
Oh, FWIW, the power steering is certainly fixable. First check to make sure the fluid's ok. If you want to repair it on the cheap, get your parts from a salvage yard. Check either

you guys are quick on your replies. i will be talking to the seller tonight. from what he has said the montero is decent. some wear and tear on the interior, the issue with the power steering and that is it. he claimed to have well taken care of the SUV. from the pix so far that he has shown me, i was very surprised that he was only asking for $2500. i attached a pix. again i thank you for your quick response.
the only real issue with the power steering is corrosion of the sector shaft.
what happens is the shaft corrodes, and the seal is no longer able to keep fluid in the power sterring box, so it all pours out. without the fluid, you have no power assist.
refilling does nothing, as it all leaks out withing a few minutes.
thats the only issue Ive ever dealt with on early montero steering systems.
