Broken 4g54 timing chain and... other issues???
Ok, I'm not a "real" mechanic, but here's what I've done. I pulled off the valve cover. The chain was broken and hanging on the side of the cam sprocket. A single tooth on the cam sprocket was broken. I pulled the chain out and inserted a telescoping magnet in an attempt to fish out the broken tooth & a side plate of the chain, but came out empty. Did you think those things dropped to the bottom of the oil pan? Next, I spun the camshaft around. It is not seized. Crankshaft spins when ignition key is actuated. Do you think the head & block... engine are still good and can just replace chain, camshaft sprocket and tensioners or am I too optimistic? Should I inspect the "B" chain/shaft and is there a simple strategy to doing this? Thanks for your time and support.
i know this is an old dead thread, but it's how i ended up on this site. so i'll answer it.
you should check EVERYTHING and basically blueprint the engine. there's a good chance you'll get away with re-using 90% of what's in there, but an equally good chance you've go bent valves or pistons with valves in them.
