Can a remote for the door locks be installed if the SUV didn't have one originally?
Hi there,
We bought a 2003 Montero LS from a friend of ours. It doesn't have a remote key fob for the locks. Frankly, I can't believe that any vehicle made that recently doesn't have one! I'm not 100% certain whether the support for remotes is there and we just didn't get key fobs or if the support isn't there either.
My question is whether this option can be installed now. If so, does the option also include an alarm? The closest I got to an answer from a dealer...once I was able to actually speak to one...was that I would have to bring them the vehicle to tell.
Thanks, Steve

Good news. Found out from previous owner that she did have a remote at one time. So I suspect it will be easier to get a replacement fob if the inner workings are there. Sorry for wasting the bandwidth.

You can buy replacement remotes online, but the instructions for pairing the remote to the car is a bit tricky. The dealer will want $100 to do it, but it can be done with a couple wires and access to the OBD port
