Default Engine coolant temperature guage

So just lately I have noticed that when i turn on my 2002 Montero Limited that the engine temperature guage jumps up 1/3 on the temperature guage. I was wondering if your guys Montero did this? Also the needle moves to 3/4 up the guage but I did notice that the needle would move up and down the guage as I drive. Do you guys think I have a faulty engine coolant temperature sensor or my Montero is overheating?

EIther thermostat, a bobble, or just a goofy quirk in the system
