Default engine options or simpler swaps for 2.6 Montero

I have 1988 Montero Sport, 2.6 with a broken timing chain. The crankshaft spins. Haven't removed the valve cover to see if the camshaft is free or seized. If the camshaft spins free, does it mean it can be easily repaired? If seized, can you recommend a simpler engine option other than the 2.6? 4g52? 4g63? or... I will be most grateful for any input.
