Default Engine temp

So my coolant temp gauge will only register to the1st line every once and a while-- most of the time it sits at the bottom. I changed the gauge sender unit with no effect-- any other thoughts??

Thanks,
Chuck

Thermostat ether stuck open or missing. It's easy to check it, since it is on the front of the engine and not much is in front of it.

Do you have a full size xls/ltd or a sport? If you have a full size montero "not a sport" more than likely its a r10 resistor or the back of the gauge cluster. Where its been soldered tends to crack leaving a ***** temp gauge. This is a very common problem on the full size montero and is easliy fixed by a couple hours, a pencil soldering gun, and a steady hand. Theres several videos on youtube and alot of online info on google.

Ahhh gotcha, then i'm gonna have to agree with hunter. Probably a stuck thermostat. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

Guys-

Thanks for the help. The thermostat was stuck open- replaced it today and the temp gauge works now. Appreciate the help!
