Default Freewheel Clutch Solenoid configuration help

Hello!

I recently purchased a 2001 Montero Sport XLS 4x4. The guy I bought it from had replaced the freewheel clutch solenoid and mentioned that he had put the hoses on it incorrectly and that the vacuum was permanently on effectively disabling the 4x4. Would you guys mind either explaining the 4x4 system to me so that I can systematically go about testing configuration of the hoses, or point me to a resource that could explain the issue? I'm not much of a mechanic but I follow direction well.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried Google? You can find diagrams right there. There are variations in hose routing between models and years, but the principle is the same. Start there.
