Grinding noise then clunk! Fixed! (4x4 flashing lights related)
you can check the actuator if it is moving by using a mity vac on the actuator solenoid, that pancake (UFO) looking thing that is connected to it which the Freewheel solenoid valves operates. actuator might be stuck. hope its not the freewheel clutch inside the front diff, thats a pricey problem.
I wanted to reply to this forum because it helped me fix this exact same problem. Hopefully, I can help someone out there save some $ with this same issue. I had the same flashing transmission light on my 2000 Mont Sport XLS 4x4. It happened after the same horrible pop with the grinding sound. Either the transfer case or front differential got in a bind. Anyway, light flashing for months. I had front diff and xfer case oil changed, but it did not fix the problem. So, found this blog, went and ordered the part "Freewheel Clutch Solenoid valve" part # MR263723 from my local Mits dealer. It was $85 with shipping. I put the part in myself. I AM NOT A MECHANIC, but I'm a little handy, i.e. do oil changes, spark plugs, etc. It took me less than an hour to replace the part, and bingo, fixed. I started the car, and the light went off instantly. I can tell that the car is no longer "halfway" in four wheel drive. So.....call your Mits dealer, order the part yourself if you're having this problem. Do not let your dealership or a mechanic charge you more than one hour's worth of work to put this in for you. ($75 to $100). Hope this helps.
glad to know that our experiences can help out others, after all this time I never had any problem with my 4WD system ever, but everytime we get rain here in seattle I go ahead and engage it to 4H and sometimes 4HL (to keep the TC in the loop) just to keep it lubricated and not act up again.

I'm new here but have exactly the same problem with Montero 2005 since 3 weeks ago.
The question is:
If I bought the part indicated by aviator79 in the previous thread and install it in a Montero 2005 (not Montero Sport), is the problem solved?
Sorry for the question but I'm a little confused due to the thread of tmcalister where he indicates that he solve the problem installing the "Freewheel Clutch Solenoid valve" part # MR263723. It appears that it is only for a Montero Sport.
Any help is welcome, thanks.

Yes, I know that it is a dumb question, but I need to be sure.
Which part number?
The "Freewheel Clutch Solenoid valve" part # MR263723 ?

Yes MR263723 is what you need for freewheel selenoid valve if you are having issues with the grinding, shuddering noise and flashing lights, it takes only like 20 min. to replace. Just take the air filter assembly to get more room to get to it and that's it. I paid $109.00 w/tax at my local mitsu dealer, but seems like if you order it from the link above it'll be cheaper.

2001 mitus monty, limited: i guess i had two problems yesterday.. flashing lights and grinding noise. the flashing lights were due to the actuator sticking on the front axle. the grinding noise was due to the left front hub bearing going out. i replaced the hub assembly. i purchased it from orielly autoparts for $186. thanks for the suggestions
