Default Info on Montero Engines Needed

Hi all,

I live in the USA and would like some input from those of you who really know their Montero's. I have three questions;

#1 Can anyone provide me a comprehensive list of what engines were sold (in the USA) fitted to the Montero years 1998-2004? What I really would like is a list detailing displacement of the engine and official factory code such as "6G72". It seems to be that several engines were introduced ranging from 3.0L to 3.8L and some were 12 valve and others 24 valve.

#2 Can anyone clear up the mystery of which engines are "interference" motors and which are not?

#3 What sort of life can be expected from the 5 speed automatic transmission in an AWD model?

Many thanks for your help.

who cares, it's an auto.

i've never personally seen an auto box survive 400 thou kms, or much over 300 for that matter. even well looked after. not to say it hasn't happened, just not in my sight.

but serisously. who cares, it's auto.

Can't help you with the your first question.
Montero engines are the interference type. Very few modern engines are non-interference types.
As far as automatic transmission goes, it depends on what kind of life it had (who makes it helps too). I've seen some (not Mitsubishi) blow up before 100k miles, than others have gone for 230k miles (my friend's GM van of all things). My '01 Montero is approaching 180k now all on the original Automatic Sportronic II transmission. There are people on this forum with more miles than that too. No complaints here.
