Default Leaking Rear Axle Seal Estimate

Hello,

I was told by a local mechanic that I have a leaking rear axle seal in my '02 Montero Sport LS 3.0L.

He quoted me a price of about $720 since there is a part that needs to be ordered direct from the manufacturer and apparently Montero Sports are very labor intensive. I called another local mechanic and he told me a price of about $188 for the seal and 2 hours worth of labor.

Since the prices were so far apart, I called a third place and he told me $720 was an accurate estimate since the bearing is pressed into the axle and one of the parts does have to come from the manufacturer.

Does $720 sound like a fair price? It's only the left rear axle that's leaking. I actually told the 2nd mechanic that the first was quoting over $700, but he said his computer was telling him $188 including parts and labor.

Thanks for the help!

$188 sounds way more accurate. The part is like $0.50, and it's not all that difficult to get to with the right tools. $700 is ****ing insane.

mitsi originals are expen$ive as ****.

aftermarket oil seals and bearings are absolutely fine. not entirely sure which seal on an axle would go.. but it's not an 800$ job.
