Looking at buying a Montero? Should I say Yes or No? Too many miles?
Hi All, looking at buying a Montero. I hope this post is in the right place. If not tell me where to put it.
About myself: I really like older 80s 90s cars and can do some work like alternators, hoses, thermostat, etc. but would not be able to do a head gasket job.
The montero I'm interested in has 247k miles and is a 1994 Montero LS 5 speed.
What I like about the one I found is that it's stick and the outside and interior are in good enough condition that it would be worth it to put some money into it.
I like the older boxier design.
It passed smog and recently had the timing belt and water pump replaced with receipts.
The seller said he would agree to something around the 2500 range.

It sure looks like a nice rig. it does look clean. If owner can back up the timing belt and clutch work with receipts, you will be getting a very good rig. I would not worry too much about the miles. Mine has just about as many miles and still trouble free. These beasts do last forever if you take care of them.
I really hope I don't get burned by someone on this forum selling their Monty, but I think the asking price is too high. Look at the KBB. Even with the unrealistic "Excellent" condition the private party sale price is far below asking price. At the very least you have lots of room to bargain. Other than that - if you are happy with the vehicle - go for it. It will give you a ton of fun.

bushcat.......Looks pretty nice from the pics. I have a few 94 Monties, and this one looks decent. The high mileage is a good negotiation item.
This one does not have the Rear Differential Lock option, but that is not critical. Can he supply you with alot of maintenance records so you know if the tranny has been serviced properly, along with other items?
Another big thing to look for is rust on the frame. Perhaps you dont have road salt in your area, but on the east coast, the road salts really attack these Monties. I have one 94 which is also an LS and 5 speed, and with the big sun roof, but the frame around the rear axle is toast. I may try welding new metal on the rotten frame, or just keep it as a great parts rig.
Another note: Working on the engine is a bit of a challenge, and pretty time-consuming to do repairs/maintenance. Even servicing the transmission requires the center frame brace to be removed. But perhaps most cars these days are more troublesome than the cars of the 60s. If your in California, dont forget those darn libtards wanting to pass a law making it illegal for you to do your own car repairs.......what is happening to our Repbulic?
