Default Looking for an engine for my 2002

I bought my 02 about 3 years ago for a DEAL (2K). The used dealer that had it pushed in a corner, had much higher end cars and didn't really see the value in it. It starts like a champion on the first crank even in these harsh Chicago winters. Id rate the body and interior at a 7 out of 10 considering the age. The wife and kids love taking it on road trips. However it is leaking copious amounts of oil. I'd either like to get the engine refurbished or buy a used or refurbished engine. Any recommendations on reliable engine sources or tips on refurbishment?

Are you able to determine where it is leaking the oil from? Common places are valve cover seals, camshaft seals and cam position sensor. Those are very easy to fix and definitely easier and less expensive then a new engine. More rare are front and rear main seal leaks. Front seal is easier to replace (don't need to remove engine. One other place comes to mind - oil cooler lines by the radiator. Some 2001-03 models had a defect in those lines so they leak a little at cripming spots. Once again - easy fix once you get correct replacement lines.

Wow. Thanks. I am going to take it to a mechanic and have a dye test done. I'm just preparing myself or the worst.

I have a complete 2003 Montero limited
motor removed and torn down.
installed new Re manufactured heads
new bearings , throttle body , mass flow sensor.
new Goodyear Wrangler tires
motor uses no oil or smokes
PROBLEM: 95 % of the cold starts I have to unplug the throttle body pigtail and plug it back in to get it to rev correctly.
Once the car is warm I never have to do this again.
CAR WILL DRIVE ANYWHERE.
NEW ROTORS AND PADS,AND CALIPERS ON REAR.
NEW Pads on front and one new caliper.
3500.00 and it yours
interior is also nice for its age. No rips or tears.
I put 7500 in the car will take half just because I can’t find anyone to work on it.
