Mating Engine and Auto Transmission ??
I'm installing a new engine (rebuilt) in a 1990 Montero.
I can't get the torque converter to slide all the way over the transmission input shaft.
I have wiggled/wabbled/used cut off bolts for alignment/swore a few times/tried every trick I know etc. etc. It hangs up with about 3/4 of an inch to go before the bellhousing would be against the engine block.
What the Heck is the issue? I've bent my pick.
Has anyone else encountered this?

support the snout of the converter with one hand while you spin it with your other hand it needs to drop on 2 sets of splines then it needs to engauge with the front pump inside the trans while you have it out dont forget to change the front seal in the trans
I appreciate the response!
I have the converter bolted to the flexplate on the engine. The engine is out of the Montero and the transmission is installed (never removed). Are you saying that I have to remove the converter from the engine and spin it onto the transmission input shaft and then somehow get it bolted to the flexplate? Or can I spin the engine/converter together to get it mated correctly with the transmission?

I did what I should have done in the first place. Read the Chilton manual on tranny removal. I have never messed with an automatic, so I was going about installing the converter all out of sequence...attached to the engine. I yanked it out that way and thought it would go back same way....no way.....dah! Hints were helpful. Thanks!!
