I have a 1997 Montero ls that has me stuck . When I start my truck it can idle for an hour with no problem but when i put it in drive and step on the gas it over heats , when it gets hot i only need put it into park and it cools down until i put it in drive again . Anyone have a clue what this could be caused from ?

The truck has 92k miles on it, As long as i don't drive it away it can idle for an hour and does not overheat. When i drive it it overheats within 3 miles. I have drained the radiator and put fresh antifreeze in it but it still overheats when I drive it.I bought a new thermostat and will install it today .The problem just started a week ago, was fine and the next minute it started to get hot .In fact when driving and the temp gauge goes to max I only need pull over-put truck in park and the gauge goes back down to normal until I drive again.Strange I know .

Have you checked the temp. gauge?
It could be sending you bad data.
If replacing the thermostat does not solve your issue, that may be something to look at...
